MOTR, Bear Hands, What a Drag

I had some help up at Race St this weekend in the form of a couple of friends who came down from Columbus to get dirty. I’m always really thankful for having great companions who are willing to donate their time for thrilling tasks like pulling nails/masonite off the floor and moving heavy ductwork around.

All work and no play wouldn’t be any fun though, and we were sure to reward ourselves at Neon’s Saturday night, complete with the company of my friend’s goldendoodle that joined him for the trip down.

Then Sunday morning comes and your heads a little fuzzy while your stomach is asking for something other Jameson and IPAs.

With all of the new burgeoning food options in OTR, Sunday brunch isn’t something I have to travel for anymore. I had given MOTR a shot when they first opened, and it was good, but not without plenty of room for improvement. Fast forward to this past weekend and I suggested we give it another shot, especially since the line down the block for forkheartknife was a bit long for some seriously hungry folks.

Three of us got the Migas tacos, which I had tried before, and they really improved this time around. Chorizo was awesome, they had cheese in them, and they were huge. My other buddy got the BLT which looked pretty good, and we all split some loaded hash browns…nothing to complain about there either. All in all, a really good meal, and the order-at-the-bar method seemed fitting for the pub.

MOTR is obviously carving out a good niche for themselves as a live music venue, evidenced by the posters plastered on the windows. One such poster advertised a Bear Hands concert coming up on the 27th of this month, and upon spying it my buddy G was already planning his next trip down for that show.

I had never heard of Bear Hands, and after breakfast he clued me in to an awesome track with an equally stellar video. Without further ado I bring you What A Drag:

Ukulele Thursday

Got to hang out with some fun people at Neon’s last night, a few of whom are a bit obsessive about music (that’s always a good thing IMO). When I got home I started sifting through my old music library for stuff I hadn’t heard for a while. There were a couple of tracks I couldn’t find so I started digging through youtube. That’s when I remembered this finger bleeding rendition of While My Guitar Gently Weeps done by Jake Shimabukuro on a Ukulele. Look up some of his other stuff, the guy is beyond talented, but this is the best.

Reggae Run 2010

Another great year for the Reggae Run. Although not as many people as last year, there were still ~2,500 rastafied crazies that braved the drizzle to come out and race, most of whom stayed for the festivities after. Like last year I made sure not to miss an opportunity to wear what may be one of the greatest hats of all time.

I shaved 1:13 off my time last year, which I thought was pretty incredible until I remembered that this time last year was about 6 weeks after I had my appendix taken out. Still, there were points on that course I thought ‘Man I am dragging ass,’ only to cross the finish line well before I thought I would.

It probably helped that Doug was on my ass the whole time…this is the first race I’ve known someone at the starting line who was running at the same pace with me. See you at Run Like Hell Doug….

Like last year it was misty, but it cleared up for the race itself, and then cooled us off at the party. Although I remember being a bit warmer at the party last year. But hey, there’s plenty of food to warm yourself up with!

Goetta sliders have become my favorite post race food. I first had them last year at this very race, and then again this year at the Fox and Hounds 5k. Good and good for you….

Not to be confined to simply goetta on a bun, I ate myself stupid. The final tally came out like this: 3 Goetta sliders, 1 pulled chicken sandwich, 1 cheeseburger, 1 cup of jambalaya, 2 chicken wings, 1 salad, 1 granola bar, and because all that wasn’t enough, one chocolate cupcake.

And a bunch of bud light….good thing I just hauled ass on what might be the toughest 5k course in Cincy…..

The Ark Band kept people dancing like they always do, and most people seemed to have a great time with no mind being paid to the weather.

And everyone wants a pic with everyone else’s goofy hats!

One last thing that is so awesome about this run…..it always gets me back in touch with one of my favorite Reggae/Roots/Dub/Soul/whatever-you-call-a-7-piece-band-out-of New-Zealand….Fat Freddy’s Drop. Works for both pre and post race pump up and cool down…and general good times. Wandering Eye put them on the map back in 2005, but they already had a huge international following from putting on amazing live shows.

Get In The Sunrise

Back to back music posts means life is really good. Saw one of the best shows of my life last night in Columbus (good thing I still have that car), Yeasayer came to town, blew passed every one of my expectations. They played everything I wanted to hear and then some. Madder Red was awesome, they killed it with a sweet version of Forgiveness to end the show, Tightrope was unreal, and as I anticipated I damn near lost it when they played O.N.E.

The highlight though, was this moment the crowd (and the band) waits for at every show. Ever since their Take Away Show came out a few years ago people have been hanging on for their chance to shout the bridge of 2080 back at the band. Completely overused but still sometimes appropriate, it was a fucking EPIC moment to take part in.

For all the craziness and wild shit that goes down on their album, that same energy is manifested on stage in a different, more lively and engaging way that makes you want to scream along at the top of your lungs and stomp to the frenzy of percussion and synths. And the basslines, fuck, it’s impossible not to lose yourself in the music, much less stand still.

I didn’t take a camera, I didn’t need one. My concert pix are all the same, and I didn’t bring the FLIP cam either. I just wanted to take it all in, this was more than a show, it was a damn experience.

The first video below is one of the Take Away Show Videos which has the moment I wrote about above. And while there were more people in the actual venue (and it’s not a crowded Paris apartment) the feeling is there, you are a part of that song. The second video is what you get at their show, and Sunrise is another ridiculously good track that pulls you right in.

I hyped it enough thru twitter and facebook, but it’s a good thing no one listens to me, cause FB’s (and especially upstairs) is a small place to see a show, and some key people I was hoping to see were there anyway. My first time seeing LD as a four piece band instead of 5 they still killed it. I rocked out front and center per usual, although as the bassist commented I didn’t have the “blackout eyes” like I did at their show in March.

Setting Up

These dudes have more fun playing than almost anyone else I’ve seen, energy I capitalize on and run with (or dance with as the case may be). Add to that the last three songs were new to me, I couldn’t have asked for a better show. I can’t wait for this new shit to be released (or “leaked” to me? c’mon fellas…)

When the gig ended I sat outside while they packed everything up into the van, ended up tagging along to Haps in Hyde Park to throw darts and shots. It was a sweet change of pace for me because as much as I love showing people the city when they come in town, it’s just as much fun to have outsiders show you around and expand your own world.

Visionary Tunes Tuesday

I know I had seen them before this, but my first memory of Loyal Divide was at 5:30ish in the morning playing above Skippers at Miami University on Green Beer Day. That was something like 3 or 4 years ago…….and I keep rocking out more every show I get to.

Although I was out of town last year, I know they jammed out at Midpoint Music Fest, and they are doing the same this year. They’ve released a couple of new singles recently, as well as a music video for Vision Vision from their Labrador EP.

I can’t pretend like I don’t enjoy a variety of ‘mainstream’ music, but I also dig crazy off the wall shit, especially when the artist can back it up live, which is most definitely the case with Loyal Divide.

A time for tunes Tuesday

I’ve got plenty to post about, but the music runeth over. Today I’ve got a couple of videos from one of my favorite new artists, Mayer Hawthorne. His first album, A Strange Arrangement, has got me on a total old music kick. Released in the later half of 2009, this thing sounds straight Motown (he is from The D, now in LA). My favorite song on the whole album, Maybe So, Maybe No, has an equally awesome (albeit the complete opposite of what I was expecting) music video. Just Ain’t Gonna Work Out, the second song, is a great example of his slower stuff, and the video does a hilarious job depicting the lyrics.

Seeing him in Vegas on NYE was pretty awesome as well.

Tunage Tuesday

I’ve been known to tell people that “I bleed music.” This doesn’t mean I can play any instruments (the opposite is true in fact), and I’m no expert on any particular genre. What it does mean is that I have a much deeper connection to music than I do to other forms of media entertainment. I can go days on end without turning on the TV, but I can’t even walk half a mile to work without donning my headphones and turning on some tunes. In an effort to continually mix up the content on here, I bring you the first of who-knows-how-many installments of tunage tuesday.

A good friend of mine started emailing me music about a year and a half ago, and we have had a nice music exchange going ever since. She recently sent me the song Static Waves by Andrew Belle, which may now hold my record for most plays of one song in a day. There is no music video for the song that I can tell, but I did find two Off-Stage clips of him playing/singing in a very Take-Away Show manner of performing (side note: if you don’t know about the take-away shows, don’t worry, I’m sure many will make there way here on future tunage tuesday installments).

The clips below are my two favorite songs of Belle’s album, and it’s cool to hear him in such an impromptu setting. For the record, I do like the album versions more. If you dig this, check out the studio stuff.

Vegas Baby!

So I never actually wrote a post about going to Las Vegas for NYE 2010 like I said I would. But I was caught up with work at the time--and besides….what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas…..except the stuff I post on here……..

So here is a little more, including the opening video from the JM3 concert--complete with a Bob Saget intro--which was an awesome way to kick 2009 the fuck out.

The Trip

The drive from Boulder, CO to Vegas was a killer 12+ hour journey through a few sets of mountains and a whole lot of snow. But it was with good company so the time flew by.

But we made it to the Planet Hollywood garage…..note to file: they have $10 roulette tables at all times….it’s a good starting point….

We gambled away money night one, crashed on a friends couch, ate some Dennys, and went right back to PH for round 2.

Honestly, I didn’t know much about John Mayer or his music before 2009. But I discovered, and grew to love, pretty much all of the music he makes. But the John Mayer Trio may be some of the greatest stuff out there. Simple in its 3 parts, bluesy in its roots, it’s a group of people that seem like they have a lot of fun on stage together. And The Joint at the Hard Rock Casino provided a great venue to take it all in.

Finger Pickin’ Good

I’m not normally a Friday post guy (although I would like to get to daily postings…..hey, I can be lazy) but I wanted to let you know about something happening this weekend (after all this is a site for keeping active and entertained).

While walking back to my car from the #birthdayburgerbash at Bar Louie on Wednesday I passed Southgate House and noticed the name “Andy McKee” on the list of upcoming events. I couldn’t place the name right away, but when I typed Andy into youtube, Mckee was the first suggested result. Upon seeing the word drifting and the thumbnail for the video I immediately remembered watching/being amazed at the following clip. 28 million views and counting says it’s worth your time to watch.

So if you don’t have plans for this Saturday (unfortunately I do) you should check this guy out. Apparently he’s an incredible one man show and the ballroom at Southgate House should be a great place to see him. Tickets are $15 in advance, $18 at the door.

A rusty, phishy weekend

This is a pretty big music weekend for downtown. Phish is coming to US Bank Arena both Friday and Saturday. I myself have never been a big Phish fan (unless Ben & Jerry’s Phish Food counts) but I have friends who are, and I’m happy to get a chance to show them around the city. Of course Saturday is also the Rusty Ball at the Duke Energy Center, so downtown should be wild when both of those shows let out!

I’ll just keep tooting the downtown horn here. I have friends coming in from different parts of the country, and they can all converge down here and party before the show. Then we walk (or shell out like $2 a person for a cab) down to US Bank. Naturally when the show is over we’ll stop by one (or more) of the fine beverage establishments between the arena and my apartment.

Viva downtown! (I feel like that should be The Cincinnatista‘s tagline)
