Update: I’ve been told that due to the construction on Dana Ave and consequent rerouting of this year’s course, that this was not in fact a full 5K. I mapped it out on Dailymile and came up with 2.86 (and yes a traced the actual route through the cemetery as opposed to what they had on the Run Like Hell site). Part of me is really pissed about this. I don’t time myself when I run, I save that for races when I really push myself. I like running, but I LOVE racing, so when I pay more than I have for any other race/party this year, I’m understandably upset when I find out that my awesome time wasn’t the result of better training, but instead of faulty course measurement (I’m giving them the benefit of the doubt that it was an accident….) I get that this is a fun run and most people are just out to see everyone’s costume. Some of us still like to race though…especially with a party that went downhill from last year but up in price….

Original Post:

My costume: I ran as my boss, who last year ran as….a runner. I wore exactly what he did, including putting my race number on my stomach (as opposed to my shorts where I normally wear it). Really lame I know, especially compared to last year, I couldn’t top Michael Phelps so I didn’t try. Now I have the bar set really low for next year….

Luckily most people put some serious effort into this:

Then I got passed by a ballerina…..

We were still pretty far up in the pack though, as evidenced by the amount of people pouring into the cemetery as we exited.

This sucker has a torturous uphill for the last mile or so, but the final .2 is good downhill and I really kicked it in to gear. As I approached the finish line and saw 20:05 on the clock I started really churning with the knowledge this would be the fastest 5K I had ever run by a long shot. Sure enough I crossed at 20:16, 44 seconds faster than my previous record.

Then it was time for the party!

My favorite post race meal

All in all: pretty good times. The party is nowhere near as awesome as the Reggae Run because there is A) not enough food B) not enough beer stations C) The Ark Band isn’t playing. But it’s for a great cause (benefiting the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation) and I ran the shit out of it! What more can you ask for.

Another great year for the Reggae Run. Although not as many people as last year, there were still ~2,500 rastafied crazies that braved the drizzle to come out and race, most of whom stayed for the festivities after. Like last year I made sure not to miss an opportunity to wear what may be one of the greatest hats of all time.

I shaved 1:13 off my time last year, which I thought was pretty incredible until I remembered that this time last year was about 6 weeks after I had my appendix taken out. Still, there were points on that course I thought ‘Man I am dragging ass,’ only to cross the finish line well before I thought I would.

It probably helped that Doug was on my ass the whole time…this is the first race I’ve known someone at the starting line who was running at the same pace with me. See you at Run Like Hell Doug….

Like last year it was misty, but it cleared up for the race itself, and then cooled us off at the party. Although I remember being a bit warmer at the party last year. But hey, there’s plenty of food to warm yourself up with!

Goetta sliders have become my favorite post race food. I first had them last year at this very race, and then again this year at the Fox and Hounds 5k. Good and good for you….

Not to be confined to simply goetta on a bun, I ate myself stupid. The final tally came out like this: 3 Goetta sliders, 1 pulled chicken sandwich, 1 cheeseburger, 1 cup of jambalaya, 2 chicken wings, 1 salad, 1 granola bar, and because all that wasn’t enough, one chocolate cupcake.

And a bunch of bud light….good thing I just hauled ass on what might be the toughest 5k course in Cincy…..

The Ark Band kept people dancing like they always do, and most people seemed to have a great time with no mind being paid to the weather.

And everyone wants a pic with everyone else’s goofy hats!

One last thing that is so awesome about this run…..it always gets me back in touch with one of my favorite Reggae/Roots/Dub/Soul/whatever-you-call-a-7-piece-band-out-of New-Zealand….Fat Freddy’s Drop. Works for both pre and post race pump up and cool down…and general good times. Wandering Eye put them on the map back in 2005, but they already had a huge international following from putting on amazing live shows.

I was all excited for the Cincinnati Beerfest. I had a blast at the Cincy Winter Beerfest, and the Meet+Greet with Rivertown Brewery went pretty well–it certainly did a good job of getting me pumped for this past weekend’s fermentation fiesta. Perhaps such a good job that I didn’t really peruse the website that much looking at the details. I naturally assumed that any event willing to call itself a beerfest would be centered around *gasp* beer. Silly me. What was labeled the Cincinnati Beerfest should have been more approriately named Cincinnati Stufffest featuring a select few beers you’ve probably already had.

I was completely unaware of what I had gotten myself into (my own fault I realize). Friday afternoon and the clock was winding its way towards quitting time, and I was getting psyched to get my tasting on. I checked my twitter feed and found an article over at Circle 3 Concepts about the errors in the ways of the upcoming event’s organizers. It was kind of a bummer to read that what I thought was going to be another great craft beer tasting was going to be more of a BMC promo event with a lot of extraneous booths and only a handful of quality brews I hadn’t sampled.

Here were my notes from the event, some of which I will elaborate on below:

I understand that in order to prevent people from getting hammered there needs to be a way to control alcohol consumption, but tasting tickets is not the way. At GABF, I typically sample over 100 beers every day, and guess what, I don’t need a full sample of every brew. Yes, I enjoy as much IPA and Barleywine as I can, but sometimes I’m curious about a smoked stout or cherry porter, and I don’t need a 2 oz. sample to try it. But at this event you had to give your ticket up even if you wanted a half-pour.

It’s pretty simple really, if you advertise unlimited samples, don’t hand me 35 tasting tickets at the door, that’s BS. I wouldn’t make a big deal about this except the guy at the Meet+Greet was pumping that info hard (someone correct me if I’m making all this up, but I swear he bragged about unlimited sampling). Now, to be fair, by the end of the night people were handing us tickets, and I had as many samples as my stomach could handle. But what does that tell you when people are giving you tickets and leaving early? I think the quote below describes my view.

I did hear some awesome music, including Oakland Blackouts by Hieroglyphics….if early ’90s hip-hop is your thing you know that’s a pretty bangin’ track.

As far as people asking what’s popular at a beer booth, that doesn’t bug me itself, I do that all the time. It was the fact that I heard it over and over again at booths that had regular commercial beer. Have you really never heard of Becks before? I guess that was the crowd the organizers were going for, and good for them, they did a good job. It’s not that I expect everyone to know everything about beer styles and what they like (I learn plenty at every tasting) but this whole event just caught me a little off guard.

The last travesty on the list is something I couldn’t get over…it was a problem that stemmed from having a catering/event company manning the booths and not brewery reps or volunteers. I watched as a guy poured a sample for a patron, looked at the glass, and poured some beer out because there was too much in the glass. Excuse me, but COME THE FUCK ON. Even at GABF, where they enforce a one ounce sample rule (but you can have as many as you want), if a pour goes a few drops over the line they won’t pour it out! If college taught me anything it’s that pouring out beer is the worst case of alcohol abuse known to man (unless it’s for your dead homies, in which case, respect).

Enough bitching, let me tell the rest of the story in pictures.

Listermann finally got a license to start making their own brews, and they had some pretty good stuff to sample. My personal favorite was the cask conditioned IPA pictured below.

Craft beer in a Peroni labeled mug...sigh....

I really hope the guys at Rivertown get control over their quality. When we tried the Hop Bomber at the Meet+Greet I thought it was a nice, well balanced pale ale. When I had it here smelled like pure butter. Diacetyl much?

Butter Bomb

Of the non beer-related stuff I found a few things that were cool:

Goofy Costumes, always a winner in my book

There were also Makers stogies....

At least there wasn’t a food debacle like the winter beerfest. We knew going in that there would be food inside for purchase, and that was OK. What has become a Cincinnati staple, Taste of Belgium, was on hand with crepes and waffles, joined by long-lived Cincy relic.

Mmmmm...the Inn.....

In the end I still had fun at the event (great company never hurts =) and I certainly ended up with my fill of beer. But when I’m evaluating which Beerfest to go to next year, I think I’ll leave this one with the suds on the floor.

This Saturday at 2:00 is the Tweed Ride, and I’ll be there in my jacket ready for a nice ride on a pushbike (yeah, we’re gettin’ all sorts of British with this). So leave your damn spandex at home (or at least cover that shit up) and come out for a ride and a pint.

Being a nice, slow, 6 mile cruise that finishes with beer, the Tweed Ride is a perfect precursor to Sunday’s Mini-Marathon (it’s a 15k, not even a half marathon) which starts and finishes at the Mason High School. Like most races, it benefits a charity (in this case the Epilepsy Foundation), and the course looks pretty flat, so it should be a nice easy cruise (that is, if you can ever consider moving 9.3 miles with your feet easy). Unlike the last two races I’ve run, there won’t be any costumes (although it would be hilarious if someone showed up as a strobe light), and it will be nice to get back into the groove of regular racing without dragging my camera with me on the course.

Coming up at the end of the month is Run Like Hell, one of the more unique races in the city. A few thousand people run through the Walnut Hills Cemetery dressed up in the wildest Halloween garb. I was injured last year and couldn’t run, but I’m looking forward to dressing up like a goofball and cruisin’ a couple miles with other like minded individuals. Much like the Reggae Run there will be a party (complete with a band) at the finish line, which you can still attend even if you don’t run. The proceeds benefit the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, which is a great cause, and one you should consider supporting.

My triumphant return to running events was the Reggae Run, and it was a great race/party to attend. I had been missing the feeling of me and a few thousand of my closest friends taking off at the sound of a pistol, slowly working our lungs to the point of heaving air in and out of our mouths. The run started off by winding our way downhill out of Ault Park until we hit Delta, where we climbed back up to Observatory and did the roller coaster that is the entry back into the park.

A quick 3.1 miles without a single flat step. This is the type of race course that fits Cincy so well. It kept a smile on my face the whole time. Although I got a few odd looks for running with my camera. It was well worth it though, especially to capture the after party.
