I had a good friend (and his bike) who came in town this weekend. The plan was to give him a tour of Cincy, show him my new spot, and hit up some mountain biking trails. We got two out of the three, and instead of packing up the car and riding Idlewild we hit the concrete jungle. Frankly it was a great way to show off Cincinnati, and we hit damn near everything from the river to UC.

Instead of trails, it’s trials…..except we are nowhere near this good.

I’m not afraid to admit it: I like to drink before I fly.

It wasn’t always that way. As a child my family took a pretty healthy number of vacations, many of which were to destinations only reached by air travel (from the states at least). Needless to say, I wasn’t boozing it up on those flights.

However, upon entering the (legal) age of alcoholic debauchery, I reveled in the chance to have a beer (and possibly a shot) before getting on a plane. It’s stuck with me ever since (including drinking an obligatory beer before boarding a 7 am flight out to Denver for the Great American Beer Festival).

All that said, I also know that upon arrival at my destination I need to be coherent and functioning. Especially if I’m flying back home, where more than likely I will get in my car and drive to my house. In those circumstances I’m always sure to be careful how much I have to drink before boarding the flight.

Apparently someone didn’t get the memo that being plastered really early in the morning while leaving the airport is a bad idea--one that may end up costing you a DUI and some toll booth repair.

Vegas Baby!

So I never actually wrote a post about going to Las Vegas for NYE 2010 like I said I would. But I was caught up with work at the time--and besides….what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas…..except the stuff I post on here……..

So here is a little more, including the opening video from the JM3 concert--complete with a Bob Saget intro--which was an awesome way to kick 2009 the fuck out.

The Trip

The drive from Boulder, CO to Vegas was a killer 12+ hour journey through a few sets of mountains and a whole lot of snow. But it was with good company so the time flew by.

So after a half a day of driving to Sin City, we finally got to……sit in traffic on the strip…..

But we made it to the Planet Hollywood garage…..note to file: they have $10 roulette tables at all times….it’s a good starting point….

We gambled away money night one, crashed on a friends couch, ate some Dennys, and went right back to PH for round 2.

The Concert

Honestly, I didn’t know much about John Mayer or his music before 2009. But I discovered, and grew to love, pretty much all of the music he makes. But the John Mayer Trio may be some of the greatest stuff out there. Simple in its 3 parts, bluesy in its roots, it’s a group of people that seem like they have a lot of fun on stage together. And The Joint at the Hard Rock Casino provided a great venue to take it all in.

Get Away Friday

It’s so close to the weekend, where you’re free to engage in any number of scintillating activities. Just a few more hours and you can take part in Cupcakes & Cocktails, the Mad Hatter Party at Arnold’s, or what is sure to be a great show with Loyal Divide and The Seedy Seeds at Mad Hatter in Covington.

Also don’t forget to get sauced early tomorrow with Kegs and Eggs starting at 6am at Arnold’s. But back to now….

Until 5 o’clock (or whatever time the paid responsibility portion of your day ends) feel free to take a mini 5 minute vacation to Paradise. Last September some friends and I went to Maui and I shot a ton of pictures and video. One of the highlights of the trip was the zipline tour of the hillside above the Ka’anapali strip. I’m still working on a video for the trip as a whole, but I did cut together the zipline clips. So lose yourself for a few minutes in Paradise……it’ll be 5:00 pm before you know it.

Snomageddon Driving

Take two minutes to ride on the Roebling Suspension Bridge (video)

I was out riding earlier this fall and I was going to take the Roebling Suspension Bridge back from Covington into Cincinnati. It just so happened the bridge was closed to cars that day, and instead of taking the sidewalk, I was able to ride over the grated part of the bridge. It was interesting (and slightly scary) to see the river right below me and it was also a bit difficult to keep the bike straight on that grate, especially with one hand.

Nonetheless it was fun.

Ok that’s likely it for the video posts this week, I hope to get back to actual writing tomorrow.

I jumped a road on skis in college

In honor of winter and actual snow falling, I thought I would post what is one of my greater accomplishments on skis--jumping over a road. Now in ski videos I’ve seen guys clear 40 ft (or bigger) gaps over roads with crazy elevation change. I’m not that ballsy, and Miami University’s terrain doesn’t exactly give you many spots to attempt something like this. Dare I say this is the only place on campus you could try it. For those of you who know Miami’s campus, this is on Western Dr, by the frisbee golf holes that go up an then back down the steep hill (holes 10+11). Enjoy…and if you break yourself trying this don’t come crying to me.

Trackstands and Wheelies

In middle school I discovered my passion for bikes. I went mountain biking in Whistler one summer and I was hooked. When I got back home I immediately got a job in a bike shop, working for discounts on parts. I rode everywhere, and even when I was at home, I would spend hours in the driveway practicing bunny hops, wheelies, and trackstands. After thousands of hours in the saddle, I have developed a pretty decent feel for the way bikes handle, and I have a few tricks up my sleeve.

That said, I ain’t got shit on these chicks. Leave it to the Germans….
