As my last post indicated, I went through a pretty tough workout last monday. I took tuesday off, wrote the draft for the Nippert stairs blog post, and went to bed. Wednesday morning at about 5 am, I woke up with terrible stomach pain, and I assumed that the medium rare burger I had made the night before was a bit too rare. No matter, I suffered through it and went to work the next day. But the pain kept getting worse.
By Friday, when the bad feelings in my gut localized to the lower right portion of my abdomen, I knew this was something a little more serious. I went to my doctor, who said I was likely suffering from appendicitis, and I needed to head in for a CT scan immediately. A thrilling Friday night activity, I went up to Christ Hospital and settled in. It confirmed (as best a CT scan can) that my appendix was inflamed, and it needed to come out. I stayed the night, with surgery scheduled for the next morning.
After a very brief nap that night (it’s amazing how many times they come around to check your vitals/take blood before you go into surgery) I woke up to get prepped for the OR. It was at that point I posted the draft of the nippert stairs workout, even though I wanted to add some pix, I figured I would get one last post up, just in case I didn’t make it out of the anesthesia.
But I had nothing to worry about, as the nurses and doctors at Christ did a great job, and I was actually home Saturday night (ahhh, the miracles of laparoscopic surgery). I wanted to acknowledge the great job they did in both treating me well, and getting that useless organ out of my body. So, thank you Christ Hospital =)
Needless to say, there won’t be too many workout-related posts in the coming weeks. Those will show up as I slowly recover, but in the meantime I’ll try and add some more about actually living downtown, and not just working out down here.
I would also like to say, that even though it was a shitty reason, this little episode ended up being a great excuse for a few people I really care about in my life to come into town and be there for moral/physical support. There is nothing like a semi-major medical emergency to put things in perspective. For some the journey was still too far, but I know you were there in spirit, and I appreciate all the well wishes.
I posted this under enjoying life, because if having an organ removed before it bursts and kills you isn’t enjoying life, I don’t know what is.
We’re all glad you made it out alive. Certainly wouldn’t want the Maui trip to be spoiled because of that damn appendix.
Advantageously, the post is in reality the freshest on this worthw hile topic. I agree with your conclusions and will thirstily look forward to your incoming updates. Just saying thanks will not just be sufficient, for the tremendous clarity in your writing. I will at once grab your rss feed to stay informed of any updates. Admirable work and much success in your business efforts!
